Smartphones have long since become a universal tool with a thousand purposes, so why not add one more to them? Scientists believe that modern phones have every chance of becoming "mobile stethoscopes", offering people excellent opportunities for early diagnosis of heart disease. The newly developed Echoes app puts them in that role, and the idea has already been tested and validated by experts.
After installing the program on the cell phone, it is enough for the person to place the device on the skin so that the microphone can record the heartbeat. All information collected is accumulated in the databases of two research centers - King's College London and Maastricht University in the Netherlands. Since its launch, the app has collected over 100,000 entries. Scientists only evaluated 7,500 of them, but that was enough to draw conclusions.
The researchers found that factors such as gender, body mass index and smartphone hardware did not significantly affect the quality of the information collected. But as the patient's age increases, the records become less readable - but remain suitable for further processing. Scientists have come to the conclusion that phones can be used as non-medical diagnostic tools and this method has very serious prospects.
