CANON

EOS R - A mirrorless for beginners and professionals

Following the announcement of the new generation of Canon cameras, the EOS R, the manufacturer challenged the entourage for a very special photo shoot. The journalists were transported into an exotic futuristic setting, marked by the presence of three tribes, who, although having different ideologies, were united with one purpose: to discover the whereabouts of a photographer who mysteriously disappeared. On the other hand, a group of fanatics, called by The Unknown, prevented the passage of the message and the clues provided by the inhabitants, who would lead the journalists in the "demand" to find the missing person. It was given the motto for SAPO to explore the whole scene, from the central tree, to the various "habitats" of the tribes. The inhabitants were the models that unfolded in poses to photograph, and in this way explore the potential of the EOS R, sold by the technology as ideal for capturing images with low light.

During our session, we highlight the intuitive way in which you can navigate the menus and change the ISO options, white balancing or aperture of the diaphragm. The automatic mode allows you to capture great-quality images without touching any options. Looking at the screen and tapping the zone you want to focus on shoots a snapshot instantly and is almost always right in our session. This format allows to obtain effectively the noda in the bokeh effect, that is, to blur the background, standing out the subject of the front, or vice versa.Obviously a course would be required to learn how to move all the camera options, but be aware that it is possible to configure the quick access buttons, and thus customize the camera for each user.On the rear two navigation buttons of the options set allow instant access to white balance, ISO and others, characterization that can also be attributed to the lens ring. So while focused to focus an object, simply rotate the ring to modify the predefined parameters. The characterization is exactly one of the favorite aspects of Nicolai Brix, a Danish photographer who was one of Canon's ambassadors to the event, in an interview with SAPO. The photographer was contacted in May to start testing the new camera and since June that has become his "arsenal" of working with the samples he has been working on. "The new lenses that came with the Canon EOS R are fantastic. I never photographed with a lens as good as this 50mm lens. This is because the new bayonet has improved the optical system, "says the photographer.

"But I've never had so much control over a camera's options. The buttons do what I want them to do. I make a lot of videos and I get good quality and great productions, "says Nicolai Brix. Your camera took some time to be at the point you like, and during the event there was a change with your device in the confusion of assigning the equipment, which left you distressed, because the personalization that gave you was really something precious to you.Another aspect that the photographer refers to is the automatic system, which can help users, making it an intuitive camera to use. "While taking great pictures in the automatic mode, users can grow with the camera because everything can be done manually, and in different ways," he adds. "When you have a lot of light outdoors, it's always easy to capture great photos, but in low light, the automatic system will help you get better shots," explains the ambassador.

The Viewfinder electronic system allows you to see more elements in the dark up to -6 EVvi, with Canon claiming for itself the first camera to allow automatic focusing on these values. The ambassador confirmed to SAPO that same capability of the EOS R: "it's like having night vision goggles, capable of shooting at a high ISO value, but without causing any noise to the photographs. The photographer also highlighted the quality of the device's touch screen. "I have to confess that, as a photojournalist first and foremost, I always say that to capture that quick moment, use the Viewfinder by tapping the screen," explains the ambassador, noting that he now looks much more at "50/50", perhaps which abuts the camera to the eye. "With the monitor I can raise the camera very high and get other angles to capture photos, just like with a smartphone."Being an outdoor photographer, having gone through places where dust and dirt abound, lens replacement is often a nightmare because during the process it can dirty the sensors. The new EOS R has the enclosure closed with a hatch, a "little miracle" for those who constantly change lenses, he points out.
Finally, Canon's ambassador leaves a piece of advice to anyone who wants to start shooting: "they will shoot. The more photos they take, the more experience they accumulate and the more they learn. "You can stay at home all day looking at the camera and exploring its technical features, but it's out there shooting how you learn how to get the best pictures.
Canon reports that EOS R comes on the market in late September, early October. Regarding prices, the body is around 2,400 euros and brings an adapter to the previous manufacturer's lenses on the market. Regarding lenses, the RF 24-105 mm will cost around 1,000 euros and the RF 50 mm will reach 2,400 euros.
