Do you have a Samsung smartphone? New feature helps block phishing calls
Samsung intends to continue helping users protect themselves from scams through spoofed calls. The new feature, which has debuted in South Korea, is called Voice Phishing Suspected Call Alert and uses artificial intelligence to detect spoofed voices in phishing calls.
"Voice Phishing Suspected Call Alert" is a protection tool that detects whether unknown callers are attempting to deceive the user with an AI-generated voice spoof. When the spoofed voice is detected, the system sends a notification to the user, reinforced by sound and vibration, the company reported, as quoted by the Europa Press news agency.
This feature appears to be limited to calls the user makes to numbers not saved in their contacts.
Although the implementation of the protection mechanism is still limited, the company plans to expand this feature to several countries.
The feature detects calls with unknown identifiers when they are voice spoofed by artificial intelligence. When the system detects voice spoofing, it sends a notification to the user. This notification is reinforced by a distinctive sound accompanied by vibration. The feature is limited to calls the user receives from unknown numbers not registered in the contact list.
This new feature is part of an effort by manufacturers to protect users from malicious calls. As Android Police points out, Google offers Call Screening, a feature that answers calls on behalf of the user to investigate the caller's identity. Apple also offers a function to silence unknown callers so you don't have to answer the phone from people you don't know. As for Samsung, the manufacturer already offers Bixby Text Call and Smart Call to protect users from potential spam and phishing calls.
The manufacturer says the new Voice Phishing Suspected Call Alert system is being trained to detect phishing calls, learning from data from the Korean National Police and the National Institute of Scientific Research. The entire call detection mechanism is implemented within the device itself.
Currently being tested in South Korea, the feature is limited to Galaxy devices running the One UI 8 operating system.
