New Galaxy S23 firmware occupies 50% of internal storage

A logical explanation appeared on the network about the recent scandal with the new line of smartphones Samsung Galaxy S23. This was written on Phone Arena.

We have already reported on indignant buyers of the new Galaxy S23 – they found that the firmware takes up to 50% of the internal storage, reaching a weight of 50 GB or even more. The vendor hasn't given any clarification yet, but it looks like the engineers who developed the OneUI 5.1 update are to blame.

As the dust of outrage has settled a bit, Galaxy S23 owners have noticed that the operating system size in the internal memory usage report varies from phone to phone. The larger the drive, the greater the weight of the system that the smartphone displays. But it shouldn't be like that – the same OS should weigh more or less the same on the same smartphones.

It seems that the main point is in the wrong calculation of the occupied space, that is, the operating system got confused between bits and bytes. As you know, 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes, but if you count in binary, actually 1 GB equals 1,073,741,824 bytes. That is, 256 GB mathematically is actually 238.4 GB.

Network experts came to the conclusion that OneUI 5.1 incorrectly considers the weight of the firmware, erroneously adding this very loss between bits and bytes to it. That's why the weight of the operating system varies greatly depending on the volume of the internal drive.

If you subtract this wrong “tail” from the system statistics, it turns out that OneUI 5.1 on the Samsung Galaxy S23 weighs about 20GB. It's still a lot for a smartphone, but it's still not 60GB. Samsung is expected to fix a bug in the free space calculation algorithm in the near future, as well as explaining why its casing weighs twice as much as the base Android 13.
