Smartphones record considerable drop in sales

Most devices experience their ups and downs. This even applies to an all-day companion like a smartphone. According to the company IDC, 300.3 million units were sold in the fourth quarter of last year, a considerable drop of 18.3% (from 367.6 million units) compared to the same period in 2021. All companies in the Top 5 fell, and of course the entire group of everyone else. But not all of them meant a drop in market share, which could have been at least a little positive news.

It retained the top spot worldwide with 72.3 million Apple units, down 14.9% year-on-year. It's certainly not small, but it improved its market share by one percentage point, from 23.1 to 24.1%. Also Samsung had some positive news. While it dropped a significant 15.6% to 58.2 million units, its market share also increased slightly from 18.8% to 19.4%. The third certainly had little reason to celebrate Xiaomi. It dropped on both metrics. Its unit sales dropped by more than a quarter. Specifically, it went from 26.3% to 33.2 million units, and its market share also dropped significantly from 12.2% to 11%. Other companies can be found in the attached table, where we can see that Oppo and vivo are quite maintaining their market shares, although both have registered almost 20% sales in the number of sales.
