The United States will impose a blanket ban on the sale of American technology to China's Huawei
The United States is taking another step to impose a blanket ban on the sale of American technology to China's Huawei, stopping it from granting licenses to American companies to export to the company. In doing so, the Biden administration further steps up the tone against Shenzhen-based Huawei, which US officials believe is helping China carry out espionage, while the company itself denies any involvement in espionage.
It was the Trump administration that in 2019 began to impose restrictions on, among other things, Huawei regarding the export of American technology to crack down on Chinese companies that it believed posed a threat to American security. However, export licenses were still issued to some companies such as Qualcomm and Intel, which were thus able to provide Huawei with technology unrelated to, for example, 5G.
Over the past two years, the Biden administration has extended restrictions on several Chinese companies, including this fall's restrictions on the supply of advanced semiconductor and circuit-making equipment, and it is these restrictions that are now being tightened.
