DELL
In early 2022, Dell showed photos of unique DDR5 CAMM modules. The company created its own RAM form factor for mobile computers and began using it in precision devices.
Rumor has it that this standard will soon be used on all laptops.
JEDEC committee member and Dell senior engineer Tom Schnell told PC World that the new CAMM specification will become the next standard for laptop RAM. It seems that the big companies of the so-called "background mode" have already decided the fate of the standard - the specification number v0.5 has already been approved by about 20 companies in the working group, and in the second half of this year JEDEC expects to finalize the v1.0 version of the specification.
Experts report that along with the improved layout density (more RAM in a smaller footprint), the CAMM is better able to scale to higher clock frequencies. For example, the 6400 MHz mark, which is now irresistible for the mobile standard, will become almost a basic configuration for CAMM. The new form factor will prove even more effective in DDR6 output.
Now the standard under the number v1.0 is undergoing final revisions and will be adopted in the second half of 2023. This means that the technology will reach the masses as early as 2024.
