DIGITAL LIFE

YouTube is testing a new tool for you to stop being an asshole in the comments, and it will shut you up if you persist-According to the platform

YouTube is rolling out new detection rules to moderate the comment area. In addition, in the event of excessive comments, the site will send a warning notification to the Internet user who is the source of the comment. If he does not calm down, the consequences are to be expected.

A new moderation policy is coming to YouTube. On December 13, 2022, the platform detailed changes to comment management in order to make this space a little friendlier for other people. There are three announcements in all, two of which are technical improvements to spam tracking and bot detection.

However, it is the third development that draws the most attention: it is a system for detecting abusive comments that violate service rules. This system will act on several levels: it will detect and delete comments considered excessive and send an explanatory notification to the individuals who write them.

If the internet user does what he wants, posting other comments of the same genre, then the platform offers a kind of graduated response: he may go through a waiting period before being able to post another written reaction. 🇧🇷 This forced suspension will potentially reach a period of 24 hours. Of course, YouTube keeps its other moderation tools in parallel.

Very concretely, YouTube's goal is to stop internet users from behaving like fools in the comments. Verbal attacks on the person behind a video or their guests, without any restriction, are unfortunately common. Initially, the new device will only work with English, but support for other languages is planned.

YouTube does not seek to prevent radical opinions, bad moods or criticism. However, there is a world between profusely insulting someone and delivering harsh but constructive criticism. Many internet users who make angry – not to say downright illicit – comments on YouTube would probably never say them out loud.

No example is given. We can guess, given the various sections of YouTube's regulations, that the provision will cover, among other things, coarse and vulgar comments, incitement to hatred, harassment and intimidation, calls for violence. These messages are subject to regular deletions, either automatically or after a report.

Google, which owns YouTube, says it is very encouraged by its tool's observations: “Our testing has shown that these temporary warnings/stops reduce the likelihood that users will leave abusive comments again. ", Is indicated. In short, by virtue of receiving warnings and mini-bans, internet users are temperate.

Of course, the tool can sometimes experience false positives and detection failures. This is common when relying heavily on auto-detection tools — YouTube doesn't have the resources to moderate all comments and videos manually via contractors or employees.

That's why the platform offers a kind of call option: “Our systems are not always efficient. Users who receive these notices can therefore provide us with their feedback to help us know whether we have made a mistake. 🇧🇷 But, in the batch of complaints, there will undoubtedly also be bad faith on the part of Internet users.
