According to online sources, Microsoft is in the final stages of developing a major software update for Surface Duo smartphones. It is based on the Android 12L software platform, optimized to work on flexible screen devices. The Redmond giant is expected to release the update in the coming weeks.
The report says that one of the most visible changes in the next update will be a user interface with Fluent Design elements, due to which it will match the general style of the Windows 11 operating system. According to the source, this applies to a number of elements, including the notification panel, the settings app and etc. There will be more blurry elements, smoother animations when using gesture controls, and the design of buttons and other controls will also change.
It seems that by making these changes, the developers intend to keep the interface familiar to Android device users and turn the smartphone into a complete companion device for Windows. The software giant wants to position the Surface Duo as an extension for the Windows PC, and adding Fluent Design elements will help with that. The quick settings in the notification tab on the Surface Duo will have a similar design to the Windows 11 quick actions menu, a redesigned pen menu that appears when you press the Surface Slim Pen 2 button, and other visual changes.
The update for Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2 based on Android 12L is currently in final testing, according to reports. Its mass rollout is expected to begin at the end of this or the beginning of next month.
