Intel reveals that Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) will come to the first PCs as early as 2024. However, it will take until 2025 to actually see the standard available on different devices.
Wi-Fi 7 is the successor to Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax), bringing twice the data processing speeds (5.8Gbps) and greater bandwidth stability to 6GHz, while also supporting up to 36Gb. /s in data processing.
Intel has plans to expand its Wi-Fi 7 development efforts ahead of its market introduction in 2024, and intends to apply its technology primarily to laptops before expanding to other devices.
“We are currently developing Intel's Wi-Fi 802.11b and Wi-Fi Alliance certification and will be installed on PCs as well as laptops by 2024,” said Eric McLaughlin, vice president of Intel's Wireless Solutions division. He adds, “we expect it to appear in major markets in 2025.”
He explains that the new wireless standard nearly doubles the frequency bandwidth from 802.11ax (170 MHz) to 320 MHz and doubles the overall speed. The executive still thinks that Intel can improve the speed even further before its availability in 2024.
