Sugon é a principal fabricante chinesa de supercomputadores e tem como fornecedoras as empresas americanas Advanced Micro Devices, Intel e NvidiaUnited States prohibits sale of technology to five other Chinese entities
Alleging national security concerns, the US government on Friday banned US companies from selling technology to four companies and a China-based research center, repeating steps taken in connection with Huawei in May. The order was issued by the Department of Commerce.
Five Chinese organizations involved in the development of supercomputers have been included in the list of entities "acting contrary to national security and US foreign policy interests." The new additions to the list are Sugon, China's top supercomputer manufacturer and three of its chip-manufacturing subsidiaries: Higon, Chengdu Haiguang Integrated Circuit and Chengdu Haiguang Microelectronics Technology. Also was vetoed the Wuxi Jiangnan Institute of Computational Technology.
As in the case of Huawei, the US government's decision will mean that these entities will lose access to US technology, which can have major consequences. This is the case of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Intel and Nvidia, all American and suppliers of Sugon.
The United States Department of Commerce has claimed that some of the supercomputers these organizations help create are being used by the Chinese government to "simulate nuclear explosions and military activities."
Supercomputing, an industry on which China and the United States are strongly committed, can play a key role in the development of nuclear weapons, encryption mechanisms, and military defense systems.
A meeting between US presidents Donald Trump and China, Xi Jinping, is scheduled for next week at the G20 summit. The event will be held in Osaka, Japan, where the two rulers are expected to discuss the deadlock in trade negotiations between countries. EFE Agency
