The Biggest Mistake by Bill Gates
There will certainly be no regrets in Bill Gates' career, but Microsoft founder and one of the richest men in the world admitted in a recent interview what was his biggest mistake. According to CNN, Bill Gates lamented having missed the opportunity to rival Apple's iOS operating system for Google's Android.
"In the software world, particularly for platforms, these are markets where the winner conquers everything. So, my biggest mistake ever was any management flaw that made Microsoft not be what Android is. Android is the standard non-Apple platform for mobile phones ... There is room for just a non-Apple operating system, "said Bill Gates in the interview he gave to the Village Global fund.
Microsoft was even the first to launch its operating system for mobile phones, running the year 2000. Apple's iOS only arrived in 2007 and Google's Android came out the following year. But Windows Mobile soon lagged behind in the race for the smartphone market.
Gates pointed out as one of the reasons for Microsoft's delay in this race the legal battle involving the company and the US Department of Justice.
"We knew that the mobile phone market would be very popular so we created what we call Windows Mobile. We lost the opportunity to be the dominant operating system for smartphones for very little. We distract ourselves with judgment. We did not put the best people to work on it. So it was my biggest mistake regarding something that was clearly within our reach. We were the company that should have achieved this and we did not do it, "he lamented. Pedro Pina, Portugal
