Using smartphones without moderation can cause bone elevation
Are you always looking down when using your cell phone? This habit may be changing you. A study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, indicates that overuse of smartphones and other head-leaning devices to be leaning forward may be modifying the human body. More specifically, the region of the head near the nape of the neck.
According to scientists at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia, this is the reason why a number of younger people have a small bony tail at the back of the head, exactly at the intersection between the spine and skull. Typically, the size of the growth is about 2.6 centimeters, and can reach up to 3.1 centimeters in length.
Known scientifically as an external occipital protuberance, entesophyte or augmented type, this small bone elevation appears in places where a ligament or tendon connects to a bone. Since this "tail" usually takes a long time to become evident, it was common for only older people to be studied.
However, the study showed the opposite. When analyzing 1,200 people aged 18-86 years, it was found that bone elevation is most commonly found in men 18 to 30 years of age. 33% of the participants presented great growth in the deformation of the encounter of the region of the head with the spine.
