New telescope wants to create a 3D map of the entire universe
This week, the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME), a telescope created to "listen" to the weakest signals from space to create a 3D map of the entire Universe.
Engadget says the telescope is made up of a structure similar to four hundred-meter half-pipes, which were built over the last seven years. More impressive, the project was initiated by a team of 50 Canadian scientists from the University of British Columbia, the University of Toronto, McGill University and the National Research Council of Canada.
"With the CHIME telescope we will measure the history of the expansion of the University and hope to increase our understanding of the mysterious black energy that accelerates this expansion. This is a fundamental part [of the field] of physics that we have not yet realized and is a deep mystery. This has to do with understanding better how the Universe began and what is ahead of us, "explained one of the researchers in charge of the project, Mark Halpern.
