China strengthens control over social networks

China reforça controlo sobre redes sociais

China's Cyberspace Administration issued a new regulation Thursday night, which stipulates that companies in the industry should check the actual identities of members in chat rooms in the online space.
The regulation also provides for increased control over the comments on the network and the establishment of a mechanism that classifies users' credibility.
The regulations will enter into force on October 08, just ten days before the start of the XIX Congress of the PCC, during which will be defined the leadership of the second world economy during the next five years.
Wechat - Chinese equivalent to the WhatsApp text and voice messaging application - has 800 million users, while Weibo - similar to the Twitter instant messaging network - has about 200 million.
