Experts say that as more people become accustomed to using free Wi-Fi, these attacks will become more common. Many people accept terms of service without reading them, which makes it easier for hackers to exploit users’ haste and distraction.

Today’s evil twin attacks are harder to detect because hackers can use small devices that can easily blend in with public places like coffee shops or airports. These devices can offer login pages that look legitimate.

Once victims enter their information, hackers quickly collect it, often without the victim even realizing it.

Avoiding public Wi-Fi is your best bet... To protect yourself, experts recommend using mobile hotspots whenever possible, as this ensures you’re on a network you know and can control.

If a hotspot isn’t an option, using a VPN can provide additional protection by encrypting your data, making it harder for third parties to intercept it.

In many airports, Wi-Fi is outsourced and lacks adequate protection, leaving users vulnerable to attack.

In one example, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport uses a Wi-Fi provider that doesn’t have direct access to the airport’s internal network, which can create security gaps.

While evil twin attacks are becoming more frequent, hackers are rarely caught. The recent Australian case was notable precisely for the arrest of the suspect, an exception in a landscape where protecting travelers’ information is often overlooked.

According to the Australian Federal Police, dozens of people had their credentials stolen during these attacks.
