Snapchat now also surfs the (AI) wave

Snap, the company that created Snapchat, has launched generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology aimed at the social network that will allow users to see more realistic special effects when using phone cameras to film themselves. The information is from Reuters.

The company pioneered the field of augmented reality (AR), a technology that superimposes computerized effects onto real-world photos or videos.

Although the company remains much smaller than rival platforms such as Meta, it is betting that producing more advanced and extravagant special effects, called lenses, will attract new users and advertisers to Snapchat.

Augmented reality developers will be able to create lenses with AI technology on Snapchat, which users of the social network will be able to use in their content;

Snap also announced an updated version of its developer program, called Lens Studio;

In the program, artists and developers can use it to create AR assets for Snapchat or other websites and apps.

Bobby Murphy, Snap's chief technology officer, said the improved Lens Studio would reduce the time needed to create AR effects from weeks to hours and produce more complex work.

“What's fun for us is that these tools expand the creative space that people can work in, but they're also easy to use, so newcomers can build something unique very quickly,” Murphy told Reuters.

Previous versions of augmented reality technology were only capable of simple effects, like placing a hat on a person's head in a video.

Snap's advancements will now allow developers to create more realistic lenses, such as making the hat move seamlessly with a person's head and match the lighting in the video, Murphy said.

The company also has plans to create augmented reality experiences for the entire body, instead of just facial ones, such as generating new clothing, something that is currently very difficult to create.
