The YouTube service has announced support for multilingual audio tracks, allowing creators to add multiple tracks to their new and existing videos, helping them reach an international audience.
Once uploaded, viewers will be able to select a different soundtrack from the same menu where they can currently adjust other settings such as subtitles or sound quality.
In initial tests, the feature was used in more than 3,500 videos uploaded in more than 40 languages, according to YouTube. As of last month, more than 15% of the dubbed video's viewing time has been accounted for by viewers who watched the video in a language other than the language of the original recording. YouTube also reports that in January alone, viewers watched more than 2 million hours of dubbed videos daily on its platform.
The feature will initially only be supported for long-lasting YouTube content, but the company tells us that it is already testing the feature for short-length videos as well.
The ability to customize a video's audio track will be available globally on YouTube across desktops, mobile devices, tablets and televisions.
