Google is starting to release a major update to the Google Maps application. Immersive View and various AR features will soon appear on maps.
In the official blog, Google writes that Immersive View starts to come out from today. This feature uses AI and computer vision capabilities to combine thousands of photos of the area into an interactive map of the city. Immersive View lets you see the city from a bird's eye view and even virtually enter some establishments for which a 3D model can be created. The feature also shows the weather, congestion and traffic jams in real time.
The immersive view is available for five cities in the first phase: London, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Tokyo. In the future, it is planned to add Amsterdam, Florence, Venice, and Dublin.
Google is also introducing another feature - Live View. It is based on augmented reality technology and allows users to find objects around them.
Live View will also help you navigate in large buildings such as airports, shopping malls, and train stations. Live View can highlight paths to exits, escalators, restrooms, bus/taxi stops, and other locations.
Google is also preparing an update for electric car owners. Google Maps will display fast charging stations, charging stations with rest areas, and points with supermarkets.
Finally, the last but not least change has been made to Google Maps route planning mode. With the update, it will no longer be possible to create a specific route by pressing the corresponding button. Instead, Google Maps will reconstruct the route to the destination in real time depending on the user's movement. The feature will work even when the smartphone display is turned off. The lock screen will display key information about the direction of travel, turns, and the remaining distance to the destination.
