WPC will soon release updated wireless charging standard

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has announced that it will soon release an updated wireless charging standard for electronic devices called Qi2.

With it, the connection of smartphones and other devices will be simplified and the efficiency in power transmission will increase.

In the first stages, the updated standard will support the same maximum power of 15 W as the first version, but after the completion of the Qi2 specification, developers will increase this number. Qi2 is based on Apple developments used in MagSafe. The company is one of the most authoritative members of the WPC.

The number of magnets in charging devices has increased, thanks to which it became easier to place phones correctly on their surface for maximum efficiency and minimum losses - the Magnetic Power Profile function is responsible for this. The standard also includes authentication mechanisms: smartphone manufacturers will be able to block charging from uncertified devices, ensuring compatibility and security. On the other hand, manufacturers can abuse this function, The Verge journalists suggested.

The final version of the Qi2 specification will be released in the middle of this year, and smartphones and chargers supporting the updated technology will go on sale just before its expiration. In total, in 2023, according to estimates, more than a billion devices with support for wireless charging will be sold, including transmitters and receivers.
