SONY

Playstation 5 should not be placed in a constantly vertical position

Impressive in size, the Playstation 5 console can be placed horizontally, but it can also be tempting to place it vertically to save space. However, keeping it in an upright position can shorten its lifespan and increase the risk of malfunction.

The cause would come from the cooling system and more specifically from liquid metal used to cool the processor. An alternative solution to thermal paste, it guarantees effective dissipation of the heat that is evacuated from the console.

Sony was very proud to be able to offer this particularly effective cooling solution for its PS5 console, after several years of R&D work to ensure its industrialization.

Liquid metal on the run...this liquid metal is enclosed in a sealed compartment and must not escape this restricted space above the CPU. However, several repairmen warn that they regularly find PS5 consoles from which liquid metal has escaped.

If it serves as a heat exchanger, it is also a conductor and spreading it over the other components on the motherboard is a good way to create more or less serious short circuits.

Between the processor that is no longer sufficiently cooled, causing slowdowns during operation, and the diffusion of liquid metal into the other components, breakage is almost inevitable.

Horizontal, less risky...The problem can occur after leaving the console in an upright position for several months and depending on the intensity of use of the console, but it remains random, affecting all variants of the Playstaton 5.

Sony does not communicate on the subject and continues to indicate that the PS5 console can be positioned both horizontally and vertically. If future developments can improve the sealing of the liquid metal tank or change the heat exchanger, it is recommended to use the Playstation 5 console horizontally, waiting for a possible confirmation.

The Japanese group has just announced that it has sold 30 million copies of its mighty home console since its launch, and is pleased to put the scarcity issues behind it that complicated its 2020 launch.
