CES 2023
More details of Samsung's first AMOLED screen that is foldable and extendable: the Flex Hybrid
Whoever thought that foldable screens were already in fashion, pay attention: Samsung is working on a screen that is also extendable. In this way, you will soon have an even bigger screen that takes up almost no space when folded.
The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023 is just around the corner. At this technology fair in Las Vegas, from January 5th to 9th, manufacturers will show what they have developed in the past year. This not only concerns products that will soon be on the market, but also innovations for the future.
The second category includes an AMOLED screen from Samsung that is foldable and extendable: the Flex Hybrid. When you open it up, the display measures about 10.5 inches and has a 4-by-3 aspect ratio. That's handy for a compact, foldable tablet, for example, that you use to view spreadsheets or do other activities.
However, you can extend the screen to a size of 12.4 inches, the same size as the Galaxy Tab S8 Plus. In this case, the aspect ratio is 16 by 10, which is very suitable for watching movies. The black bars at the top and bottom are much smaller.
So you don't have to choose between a tablet for work and a tablet for entertainment. However, a lot of space is still needed on the right side for the extension mechanism. This can be at the expense of the battery. So it will be some time before this screen is actually incorporated into a tablet or other product.
At CES 2023, Samsung will also be showing another retractable screen that was previously announced. It's a 13-inch screen that measures around 17.3 inches when extended.
This immediately raises the question of whether a smaller variant is also conceivable for smartphones. The foldable Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 has an almost square 7.6-inch screen inside. Of course it would be nice if you could extend this to a wider screen of around 9-10 inches. So you have a compact home theater in your pocket where you can watch great movies. For now this is music from the future, but we keep dreaming.
