CES 2023
For those for whom the power consumption of a laptop is of critical importance, the Lenovo company offered a rather unusual ThinkBook Plus Twist transformer.
It allows you to alternately use different displays - OLED or a screen with electronic ink E Ink. The latter has a relatively low refresh rate, but consumes extremely little power.
The company introduced the ThinkBook Plus Twist laptop model at the CES 2023 expo, which takes place today in Las Vegas. The transformer is a variant with two screens on a special hinge, which allows you to use one or the other screen.
The 13.3-inch touch OLED variant provides a brightness of 400 cd/m2, a resolution of 2.8K and a refresh rate of 60 Hz. It displays 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut. One turn of the front panel and the owner will be able to use a 12-inch color E Ink touch screen with a refresh rate of 12 Hz - it will not be enough for watching videos or playing games, but for reading a paper will not work, and for printing - this that's enough.
Such displays are used in readers like the Amazon Kindle and consume very little energy, significantly increasing the operating time of the devices in relation to options that use displays based on other technologies. However, they usually don't display many colors and the screen's refresh rate is also low. In Lenovo's case, it doesn't matter. If you need to use the notebook in normal mode, just flip the display over and use OLED.
However, you should not expect the model to work without recharging for months, like e-readers. The system runs on a 13th generation Intel Core processor with Windows operating system, has up to 16 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB of PCIe Gen 4 storage, so it consumes much more than the "reader" chip. However, Lenovo claims that the battery with a capacity of 56 Wh when using only the E Ink screen will allow it to work for up to 21 hours straight, although it is not specified which content was used for testing during this period of time.
For some reason, the model only has two Thunderbolt 4 ports (USB Type-C) and a 3.5mm audio jack for headphones. Also, it is not clear why, according to modern trends, the laptop was not made with an OLED screen refresh rate of at least 120 Hz. But the laptop supports using a stylus.
It's not the first Lenovo laptop to use a similar swivel hinge, and it's not the first to get an optional E Ink display, but it's probably the company's only option with an equally convenient design. The laptop will start at $1,649 and deliveries are expected to begin in June 2023.
