APPLE

Mark Gurman: ''iOS 17 may have fewer major changes than originally anticipated''

iOS 17, the next major update for the iPhone, may feature little new than Apple initially budgeted for. The company and its engineers, in fact, are focusing more on the upcoming AR/VR viewer.

Apple has been working on its AR/VR headset and operating system for several years now, xrOS. With the launch now slated for 2023, Apple engineers have focused less on other operating systems, including the upcoming iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 updates. In fact, in his latest Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman he states that iOS 17, known internally by its codename Dawn, may have "fewer major changes than originally anticipated". A similar fate appears to befall macOS 14, codenamed Sunburst. Apple is focusing more on ‌xrOS‌.

Given the few new features, it is also likely that Apple will maintain the current compatibility of iOS 16 also for the next update, therefore from iPhone 8 and later, as has happened in the past with iOS 14 and iOS 15.

Apple's new operating systems, namely iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS 14, tvOS 17 and watchOS 10, will be announced during the usual WWDC taking place next June.
