Modern cell phones have very capable cameras. They are quite flexible and offer a combination of a classic sensor with an ultra wide-angle lens and, for example, a telephoto lens. However, it cannot do what classic SLR cameras do – install external lenses. And with that comes the latest concept from the Xiaomi and Leica workshops.
Xiaomi 12S Ultra Concept...This concept is based on the Xiaomi flagship phone, namely the 12S Ultra model, which bets precisely on cooperation with Leica. It is therefore possible to attach external lenses to the back of this unique device and Xiaomi claims that it is compatible with Leica M series lenses.
The phone itself is equipped with exactly two-inch photochips, probably of the Sony IMX989 type from the original 12S Ultra model, and the entire photomodule is protected by a sapphire glass. The second photochip is used to directly capture light from an external lens.
This concept looks classic at first glance Xiaomi 12S Ultra, but of course its construction had to be properly modified. The external lens is mechanically coupled to the phone's photo module and the installation is similar to that of classic SLR cameras.
Simply place the lens on the ring that surrounds the rear photo module and rotate it to lock it in place. The camera is capable of capturing images in 10-bit RAW output and, as you can see from the attached video, produces truly stunning professional-grade images.
When will this unique gadget be available?...Unfortunately never. This is really just a concept and a demonstration of what can come out of the collaboration between Xiaomi and Leica. Only 10 pieces were produced so this is a truly unique item. And very expensive, I might add. A piece of this Xiaomi model is valued at a whopping 41 thousand dollars, that is, about 1 million kroner (Swedish currency). Some pieces have reached the hands of influencers, so sooner or later some hands-on videos and demonstrations of how the concept works in real life will emerge.
