Bullitt Group, the British manufacturer of CAT-branded smartphones, is working with Taiwanese mobile platform developer MediaTek to launch a satellite-enabled device that will hit the market in the first quarter of 2023.
We've known for a long time that the answer lies with the satellite, but invisible and seamless integration [of the satellite communication module] into a smartphone presents enormous technical challenges. MediaTek and Bullitt share a pioneering spirit and a history of innovation, so now, after nearly two years of our relationship, we are together at the forefront of the new telecommunications era and offer our carrier partners the fastest and easiest way to offer their customers peace of mind,” the Bullitt co-founder told Richard Wharton's PCMag Group.
This will be the first model on the MediaTek 3GPP NTN platform - in the absence of available mobile or Wi-Fi networks, the smartphone will be able to send messages via satellite. Bullitt specified that the system will work quickly enough: connecting to the orbital communication network and sending messages will take about 10 seconds. The cost of satellite services for this smartphone has not yet been specified, but the company said that in the first year after purchasing the device, users will be able to send emergency messages for free - similar to the iPhone 14.
