Netflix: Free account sharing will be phased out

Netflix is stepping up its efforts to force viewers who try to use its free services to pay. According to the CNET portal, at the beginning of the next year the company will start charging for sharing passwords outside the home.

Essentially, the service implements a system that adds fees to your subscription for the sub-accounts of “other members” who use your subscription outside of your home. The fee amount has not yet been disclosed. However, the fee has been tested for 6 months in several Latin American countries, and the fee for each additional member is equivalent to about a quarter of the Standard subscription price. It is worth in Slovakia 9.99 euros per month.

If Netflix maintains prices during testing in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru, each additional member sub-account in Slovakia would cost approx. 2.49 euros. In the US it would be 3 to 4 dollars. It is questionable whether the “other members” charge will apply to Slovakia. A few months ago, Netflix increased subscription prices in the US but remained unchanged in Slovakia

It's not the only idea the service wants to use to increase its revenue. Just a few days ago, it introduced a cheaper subscription with preview ads, although it has built its marketing on the absence of ads in the past. The main reason is the huge sums invested in the production of own films and series to delay the departure of users to competitors (Disney+, HBO Max or Apple TV+).
