KIOXIA
Kioxia announced the creation of the world's first working prototypes of 2TB microSDXC memory cards. This is the maximum volume allowed by the standard - the unit was manufactured using proprietary BiCS FLASH 3D flash memory and a proprietary controller.
The amount of memory in smartphones, action cameras and handheld game consoles is constantly growing, indicating a need for memory cards with greater capacity, the company said in a press release. It has been more than ten years since the SD Association released the SDXC card specification, but so far no drives have been released with a maximum capacity of 2TB as per the standard.
Kioxia's prototypes are based on 16 1TB memory arrays with a maximum thickness of 0.8mm in the mounting area, making them the best choice for high-capacity drives. The company will begin mass production of microSDXC cards with a capacity of 2TB as early as 2023. The estimated retail price has not yet been announced.
