Huawei Watch D: The company's first watch that can measure blood pressure, heart rate, ECG and blood oxygen level
The Huawei Watch D, the company's first watch that can measure blood pressure in addition to heart rate, ECG and blood oxygen level, will soon be available in Europe.
The watch is thicker compared to the company's other accessories (51 x 38 x 13.6 mm) but surprisingly light on the wrist despite its 40.9 grams. It can be purchased with two strap sizes, 13.3 or 11.8 cm options. As the connector and strap are unique, replacement is not an option. The TruBP bracelet contains air bags that inflate in the same way as classic blood pressure monitors, and for this, the watch mechanically inflates. The inside of the TruBP belt can be removed, but at the same time we lose the IP68 protection because the air inlet of the belt is exposed.
It can be wirelessly charged, for which the company adapter is included in the box. Watch D can be used with Huawei Health app, here we can see the results of our blood pressure measurements, ECG results, and there is an option to set a reminder for measurements, and our data can be shared directly from the app. in PDF with our doctor. At the same time, the company warned that the ECG function will not be available in the EU for now, official authorization is in progress, but they expect the Watch D, GT and other ECG-capable Watch products to also receive authorization in the fall. If the authority has given the go-ahead to the ECG, a software update will reach the phone app and watches, which will activate the function.
However the blood pressure measurement works, there is a separate menu for this on the watch. When pressed, the device asks us to cross our hands over our chest and hold our elbows with the other hand, so we don't move or talk during the measurement. Just as medical blood pressure monitors and airbags inflate, we feel them getting tighter and tighter on our wrists. There is no sound, the meter squeezes evenly and quickly in the person's hand. The end of the measurement is signaled by a small vibration on the watch, and you can also see a brief description of the results with useful colors: in the green band everything is fine, in yellow you should pay attention and in red you should visit a doctor.
The watch measures blood pressure at the wrist to within ± 3 mmHg. The ECG function incorporates the TruSeen 5.0+ system with photoelectric sensors and PVD coated electrodes to filter inference and can predict atherothrombosis (arteriosclerosis), arrhythmia (heart rhythm disorder) and sleep apnea. Of course, there's blood oxygen saturation and pulse measurement, sleep and stress monitoring, dozens of forms of exercise and sports tracking, plus Huawei Health's background system.
On top of all that, Huawei promises a seven-day runtime for the product with one charge and one blood pressure measurement per day. The watch has GPS and NFC, and Bluetooth 5.1, which can be used to connect with smartphones running Android 6.0, Harmony OS 2.0 or iOS 12. The price will be 399 euros, for now only “some markets” will receive the watch, which probably means Germany and Italy in the first round.
