Geekbench: Xiaomi also slows down the performance of its gadgets

One of the developers of the popular Geekbench benchmark, John Poole, accused Xiaomi of deliberately limiting smartphone performance – the company slows down benchmark apps disguised as games but allows them to run at full capacity.

John Poole tweeted that Xiaomi is limiting device performance based on app names. In particular, disguising the Geekbench app as the popular Fortnite game led to a performance drop of 30% in single-core tests and 15% in multi-core tests. The same thing happened when Geekbench was disguised as Genshin Impact.

Judging by this data, Xiaomi slows down at least gaming - it's not yet known if this applies to other apps. Presumably, this is done to prevent smartphones from overheating and save battery life. The expert's main claim was that benchmark applications that measure performance are not "regulated" in this way, which misleads buyers about the actual performance of gadgets.

This isn't the first time the company has been accused of such practices, but the main reason for the uproar was that Samsung recently drew attention for similar behavior. The South Korean giant was forced to apologize for the poor performance of the Galaxy S22 flagships and release an update to prioritize gaming performance. A year ago, OnePlus was accused of doing such a practice of slowing down the performance of its gadgets.
