Wearable devices on the rise
International Data Corporation (IDC) summarized the results of its worldwide wearable device market survey for the third quarter of this year. This includes sales of wireless headsets, fitness trackers, smartwatches and other devices.
The supply of products in the designated categories is growing despite the global shortage of electronic components. In the quarter, shipments totaled 138.4 million units, 9.9% more than last year's result (125.9 million units).
The category of audio devices registered an increase of 26.5% year-on-year: these devices represented 64.7% of the total volume of wearable products sold in the third quarter of this year. Another 34.7% came from devices designed to be worn on the wrist.
The biggest player in the global wearable device market is Apple, with a share of 28.8% against 32.8% a year earlier. In second place is Samsung, whose share rose from 8.9% to 9.2% in the year. Xiaomi closes the first three with a result of 9.2% against 13.2% in the third quarter of 2020.
Furthermore, among the top five are Huawei and Imagine Marketing (BoAt brand), whose shares are 7.9% and 7.2%, respectively. All other wearable device vendors together hold 37.7% of the global market.
