“Face with Tears of Joy” is the most popular emoji in the world

The Unicode Consortium published a ranking of the most popular emojis in 2021. The first three are "face with tears of joy", "red heart" and "rolling on the floor with laughter". The most common emoticon, otherwise known as "slightly smiling face", oddly enough, hasn't even made it into the top ten because in the modern Internet community, according to The Guardian, it's "colossally offensive in every way".

The “face with tears of joy” is supposedly the most popular emoji since 2017. As of 2021, it accounted for more than 5% of emoticons sent online. The Unicode Consortium notes that the use of emojis is very consistent and predictable. In the 10 most popular emojis of the last two years, only one change has occurred, and that is that two very similar emoticons - "smiling face with hearts" and "face with eyes with hearts" - are located in the seventh and eighth positions, respectively, have switched of place.

The “slightly smiling face” is located in 28 positions, between the “clap of hands” and the “red face”. For many internet users, it symbolizes condescending pats on the head and disrespect for the interlocutor's words, so the use of this emoticon is discouraged.

It is noteworthy that the coronavirus pandemic has contributed little to the popularization of the emoji microbes, which have barely made it into the top 500. Note that at the moment there are only 3,663 emoticons.
