According to Omdia, Business Korea: Samsung is the leading semiconductor supplier ahead of Intel
Omdia said third-quarter semiconductor revenues were driven by seasonal factors, component shortages and high memory chip prices. The latter circumstance largely contributed to the fact that Samsung Electronics ended up being the biggest chip supplier once again, taking Intel out of the top spot.
Over the year, the Korean giant increased its revenue by 13% to $21 billion, while Intel's revenue dropped 1.8% to $18.8 billion. In the previous 11 quarters, Intel managed to maintain its lead, but memory market conditions once again up to the Korean manufacturer. For the first time, Samsung managed to remove Intel from the “throne” in the third quarter of 2017, but by the fourth quarter of 2018 the processor giant had recovered and regained its leadership status.
According to the data in the table, it is noticeable that memory manufacturers in the third quarter of this year showed a clear evolution in terms of sales. SK hynix maintained its third place with a 10.8% increase in revenue, while rival Micron Technology in fourth place posted a 9.8% increase in revenue. Qualcomm finishes in the top five with the most notable revenue growth in the top ten – 19.5% in one go. From now on, we are talking about a consistent evolution of revenue compared to the second quarter of this year.
NVIDIA, while ranking sixth, posted a revenue increase of just 4.5%. Broadcom barely changed its financial performance, with MediaTek in seventh place with a 4.8% increase in revenue. Texas Instruments, in ninth place, remains the last representative of the top ten, whose quarterly revenue exceeded $4.3 billion. AMD, with a 12% increase, earned $4.24 billion in the third quarter and remained in tenth place.
Total revenue from the sale of NAND memory in the third quarter sequentially increased by 13.8% to $18.7 billion. The capacity of the semiconductor market as a whole grew 7.6% to $153.2 billion in the third quarter. Controlled 44% of the RAM market and 34.5% of the solid state memory market, based on TrendForce statistics.
