Rederi AB Gotland

Swedish company is working on the development of a kind of hydrogen powered cruise ship

Swedish company Rederi AB Gotland is developing a floating vessel to become the first large-capacity hydrogen-powered passenger ferry. The Gotland Horizon project hopes to order the first emission-free ship in 2025, with flights from the Swedish island of Gotland to and from the mainland scheduled to begin in 2030.

According to the developers' plans, the ship will have the capacity to transport 1,900 passengers and 600 cars or 100 trucks. The project partners are the Swedish Destination Gotland ferry line and the Gotland Tech Development company.

Rederi plans to use a combination of gas and steam turbines, which will allow, in addition to hydrogen, the use of other types of ecological fuels. Although the hydrogen and/or fuel mixtures with their participation are considered “the fuel of the future”, the infrastructure for the construction of hydrogen transport and related infrastructure is in its infancy.

Destination Gotland head Marcus Risberg (Marcus Risberg) says when you have to pay more for carbon emissions and new laws come into effect, using fossil fuels will become much more expensive.
