VODAFONE

Company already works in partnership to build eco-towers for mobile communications

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced the development of “green” mobile towers for the UK, powered by its own wind turbines and solar cells. Thanks to this, they can be installed in remote areas that do not have access to the electricity grid.

Vodafone partnered with Crossflow Energy to build the towers, and the technology will be jointly tested with Cornerstone, which specializes in mobile infrastructure solutions.

The new towers use wind, solar and battery power to ensure uninterrupted communications. However, even wind turbines are designed so as not to pose a threat to birds. The last point is very important, as the towers will also be located in areas with a large number of birds.

Commenting on the new technology, Vodafone UK Spokesperson Andrea Dona said: “We are committed to improving communication in rural areas, but our initiatives face very important challenges. Connecting towers to power grids can be a huge barrier to achieving this goal, so making these facilities self-sufficient is a big step for us and the mobile industry. "

Vodafone and Crossflow Energy have already built some towers, Vodafone and Cornerstone will start installing them at some test sites, with a pilot project expected to start before the end of the year. The UK mobile network industry has pledged to cover 95% of the country by 2025, and Vodafone's standalone towers will help achieve that goal.
