Russian technology company creates USB flash drive with physical self-destruct function

Rostec State Corporation announced the creation of a flash drive with the ability to physically destroy stored information at the touch of a button. It was developed by experts at JSC NPP Krasnoznamenets, from the holding company Technodinamika, which is part of the state-owned company.

In a flash drive, all the components – a memory chip, batteries and controls – are housed in a single box. At the end of the body there is a button, pressing it with the help of the power supply activates the electric detonator. As a result, the printed circuit board is burned by a cumulative jet so that information stored on it cannot be restored.

The pen drive is absolutely safe for the user, as the integrity of the case is not violated when the detonator is triggered.

“In today's digital world, data security requires special attention. We created a new device capable of securely protecting information from unauthorized access: the impossibility of data recovery was confirmed by the forensics. In the future, the device will be tested for safety during long-term storage, for resistance to mechanical and climatic factors, as well as for working out various options for the housing design,” said Igor Nasenkov, Managing Director of Technodinamika.

Potential consumers of the novelty can be government agencies as well as companies that use confidential information in their work. The external appearance of the pen drive, as well as the amount of its memory, can be chosen by the customer. The time of launch of the new feature is not yet known.
