Google Maps will send traffic alerts related to coronavirus
A new version of Google's map service will send traffic alerts related to the new coronavirus and warn the user about crowds in transport services, such as buses and trains.
Updated versions of the smartphone app will also inform drivers about Covid-19 checkpoints or roadblocks.
"We are adding functions to help the user easily find important information if they need to leave, whether by car or on public transport," explained Google Maps director of product management, Ramesh Nagarajan, in a blog. Covid-19 checkpoint alerts will begin with crossings at the border between the United States and Canada or Mexico.
When the person is going to use Google Maps to travel by public transport, they will be informed if there are limited hours, if they should wear a mask or if agglomerations are planned. "Having this information before and during the trip is essential for essential workers, who must travel safely, and it will be more important for everyone as countries begin to reactivate," said Nagarajan.
In addition to the United States, where traffic alerts are already available, they are being implemented in Brazil, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Colombia, Spain, France, India, Mexico, Holland, United Kingdom and Thailand. "We show these alerts from those places from which we receive information authorized by local, state or federal governments, or from their websites," said Nagarajan.
The Google app has over 1 billion active users, mapped over 220 countries and territories, and offers live traffic updates in 171 countries.
