DIY: create a smartphone holder with egg carton
Designer Paul Priestman shared a trick for making a smartphone stand with a box of eggs in order to avoid “bad angles” and sore arms when making and participating in video calls during the pandemic.
In the video, the PriestmanGoode co-founder shows “the perfect trick for quarantined life” - using just a box of eggs and scissors, all in less than two minutes.
The idea arose out of "necessity," he explained, as people continue to work from home during social isolation, which has led to an increase in time spent on digital devices as the only form of communication.
The first prototype was with a box of wine. He then made several different versions, refining the design at each stage to ensure that the item met a number of requirements, including the use of hands-free, offering a good angle and suitable for portrait and landscape orientations.
"My goal was to create something that people could do in their own homes, without tools and with everyday materials," said Priestman. "Eventually, I got to the egg carton and found the perfect material."
As Priestman explains in the video, you take a tray of eggs and cut the lid off. Discard the cover and then cut around the bottom of the egg carton, adding a little more height to the area where the phone will be, to ensure sufficient grip.
Fix it by cutting all the rough parts and then the phone can be placed inside the case, held in place by the wavy edges and cone-shaped protrusions in the center.
An improved version of the stand allows you to charge your phone while using it. To do this, just cut the cover too, turn it upside down and glue it to the other, and make a hole in the base so that the cable fits.
