A probable successor to the W2019 flip phone has just been approved
The Wi-Fi Alliance has certified a device called the Samsung SM-W2020. As the SM-W2019 is a high-end flip phone released last year, it appears that this new model number will conforn to the same form-factor. If so, it may have a new product name on its release as well .
The Wi-Fi Alliance has reportedly releasd certification documents for a Samsung device called the SM-W2020. This model number gives the strong impression that it is the upcoming "Galaxy W20" depicted in what is said to be official promotional material. Accordingly, it may turn out to be the latest in a series of highly niche phones that has been going for the last few years.
The line in question has been heretofore known as the Samsung W-series. Its more recent examples include the W2018 (which, ironically, was released in 2017) and W2019, which have similar specs to those of high-end "normal" phones such as the Galaxy S flagships. However, they are also clamshell phones that are typically only sold in China or South Korea.
Therefore, it appears that the W2020 - or perhaps Galaxy W20 - is another device along the same lines. It is rumored to be powered by the Snapdragon 855, have at least 8GB of RAM and to get 512GB of internal UFS 3.0 storage. It is not clear if it will improve on its predecessor's dual AMOLED screens with something like an expanded flexible display (as with the Motorola Razr's projected design) at this stage.
In a world with saleable Galaxy Fold units of similar specs, this may seem unnecessary. However, Samsung appears to believe that fancy flip-phone demand is high enough to warrant supporting both products. As if to corroborate this theory, the alleged Galaxy W20 leaked material also shows that it will have 5G variants. On the other hand, it appears it will also launch without the latest version of Android.
