United Airlines, which has been the only airline to use biofuels regularly on its aircraft since 2016, is now flying farther on its sustainable initiative.
All flights departing from its hub in Los Angeles are now fueled by biofuels made from agricultural waste certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials, free translation).
Last month, United has extended its contract with Boston-based manufacturer World Energy to buy up to 10 million gallons on a commercial scale over the next two years.
This enables the airline to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60% throughout its life cycle. And it helps United meet its commitment to cut its emissions by 50 percent by 2050 compared to 2005 - equivalent to taking out 4.5 million vehicles, the total number of cars in New York and Los Angeles summed.
In addition to its purchase agreement with World Energy, United has invested more than $ 30 million in Fulcrum BioEnergy, a California-based sustainable fuel developer. According to the airline, the investment remains the largest individual investment by any airline globally in sustainable fuels, and its agreement to buy nearly 1 billion gallons of Fulcrum BioEnergy is also the largest agreement to purchase biofuels in the airline industry.

United Airlines' biofuel supply partnerships account for more than half of the total trade aviation sector agreements for sustainable biofuels. "Investing in sustainable aviation biofuel is one of the most effective measures an airline can take to reduce its impact on the environment," said Scott Kirby, president of United, in a company statement.
