Ten years of .EU domain: 4 million domain names.EU domain will be redrafted
It was 13 years ago that the European Union adopted the official .eu domain, which is intended for the exclusive use of citizens and entities located in the European area. But the rules will change and the agreed reformulation will allow the .eu domain name to be registered by citizens outside the EU, regardless of their country of residence, and thus access the European Economic Area (EU / EEA).
The European Commission justifies the need for reform for the rapid change and evolution of the markets, forcing greater flexibility in the regulatory environment of the digital space. "This agreement reinforces the rules of transparency, fairness and accountability," says Swedish Rep. Fredrick Federey.
The new rules will also allow anyone, who is not a citizen of the EU but residing in a Member State, or organizations established in the European area, to register the .eu domain as well.
This agreement will still have to be approved by industry, research, energy and plenary committees. This will then be published in the official newspaper and put into action 20 days later, with the entry into force on October 13, 2022. Sapo
