Cockroach milk is very rich in nutrients and protein and may be next superfood
Almond, coconut, soy milk, in short, there are several options already found and consumed as alternatives to traditional cow's milk. But a new version, rich in nutrients and proteins, may in the future be the new superfood: cheap milk.
Cockroach milk has up to four times more protein
The idea of consuming cockroach milk may not sound so pleasant and appealing, but according to a study carried out in India, milk extracted from a specific species, the Pacific cockroach (Diploptera punctata), is a highly nutritious substance with almost four times the protein found in cow's milk.
Despite the possible great health benefits, cheap milk can still take a while to turn into a common food, for sale in the supermarket. First because, according to scientists, the liquid is harder to obtain.
Cockroaches, obviously, would not be milked like cows. The most common species are known to lay eggs, but the Pacific cockroach-beetle gives birth to the cubs. And tiny crystals extracted from the gut of the embryos give rise to the "milk."
In addition, according to the researchers themselves, further studies are needed to find out if the consumption of cheap milk is safe for humans, since the levels of growth hormone present in the liquid are unknown and their high sugar contents might not be so suitable for health.
