Criada solução tecnológica que torna cartão de cidadão mais seguroENGINEERS CREATE BIOMETRIC ALGORITHM THAT BECOMES IDENTIFICATION CARDS
"The citizen card contains a visible part, with all civil identification, and an electronic component - a chip that includes the biometric data of the holders, such as fingerprints, photography and height, as well as other information such as abode, "INESC TEC researcher Ana Rebelo, one of those responsible for the project, told Lusa.He explained that this component allows the user of the citizen card to identify themselves before the computer systems and to sign electronic documents, also making possible the correspondence between the holder and the holder of the citizen's card, through the fingerprint.

This technology, continued the researcher, developed by INESC TEC at the request of the National Printing House of the Currency (INCM) - entity responsible for the production of security documents -, is already incorporated in citizen cards that are being issued.
Until the incorporation of this new technology, the INCM used in citizen cards "a solution of a company that required the use of certain proprietary equipment," said Ana Rebelo. In order to "ensure lower costs in the use of cardboard functionality, INCM needed its own biometrics algorithm," a "national solution for biometric fingerprint identification."Ana Rebelo added that this new technology, which took about two years to be developed, was "extensively validated", in conjunction with INCM, and presented better results when compared to the previous solution, both in terms of speed and security.According to the researcher, INESC TEC was chosen by INCM to develop this solution due to the institute's knowledge in the area of computer vision and software engineering, something that is already recognized internationally, with several partnerships and projects with other companies.
