Microsoft's new patent adds touch to virtual reality
Microsoft has filed a patent related to the augmented and virtual reality of an accessory dedicated to tactile features, as a new way of feedback to users. The device is called "electrostatic side clutch" and is illustrated as an accessory for the arm equipped with haptic motors. The goal is to enable users to experience weight, endurance and inertia during interaction with the objects they are manipulating in the virtual world. In most solutions of the so-called "mixed realities", ie virtual or augmented, users only have playful contact through the visual and auditory senses. But with the new system it is possible to add tactile feedback, creating a greater immersion and realism in the manipulation of objects.
More than a simple "gimmick," technology can elevate rules in video games to a new level, setting an example of a basketball title like the NBA 2K18. In addition to the feel of throwing the ball into the basket, the device can be configured to detect missing contact with virtual opponents. In addition to the arm accessory, the design includes a glove and various electrodes scattered throughout the body for the detection of different parts of the body, such as the arms, legs and hands. It is now necessary to move from the patent to the prototype to show the potential of these new virtual reality accessories.
