More than 10 thousand municipalities have already registered for a program that guarantees free Wi-Fi in Europe
After several delays, the WiFi4EU portal was launched about two weeks ago to give municipalities the possibility to register before applications are due, due to take place on 15 May.The latest figures shared by the European Commission now indicate that more than 10,800 municipalities have already made this registration which is essential in order to be able to apply. The goal of the WIFI4EU project is to install hotspots in public spaces so that everyone can freely access the internet as early as 2020. Parks, squares, hospitals, health centers, public buildings, museums and libraries, but also train stations and buses, will allow free access to residents and non-residents, with a simple authentication process, without advertising and with protection of personal data.
The project received a green light in October and the portal was expected to start until the end of 2017, with applications to move forward until January 2018.The launch of the WIFI4EU portal allows European municipalities to record their details and interest before the first call for projects, which should only take place in mid-May. Only then will the application process for funding for the creation of hotspots begin, with the allocation of the first thousand vouchers of 15 thousand euros each, which will be done on a first come, first served basis.
At the time of the European Parliament's approval, Carlos Zorrinho, the European MEP who was the rapporteur for the project, highlighted the advantages that the municipalities could have with the initiative but warned that it was necessary that they be attentive and proactive in the candidacies.
There are already more than 200 registered Portuguese municipalities. According to the rules, each country will receive at least 15 vouchers, but municipalities that are faster have more advantages.
