China builds test area for unmanned boats
In the year that (finally) the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge will be ready, becoming the largest sea crossing in the world, Zhuhai's maritime economy has been given a new impetus by announcing the construction of a test field offshore for autonomous ships, the Business Insider reports.Internet devices, communication and lighting installations will be installed in the project, with the system also being equipped with navigation radars, automatic anchoring berths and other auxiliaries to allow the testing of ships in varied and multidimensional scenarios.All this will allow the testing of technologies and real-time data collection of the performance of autonomous boats in the prevention of obstacles, in remote piloting, in autonomous operations.The project, which will occupy an area of ​​about 297 miles, results from a partnership between the Zhuhai Government, China Classification Society (CCS), Wuhan University of Technology and the Zhuhai Yunzhou Intelligence Technology.In December, China will have conducted a first test with autonomous boats, notably the 6.8-meter Huster-68, which, along with other unmanned surface vehicles, patrolled the Songmushan Reservoir.
