WIFI4EU receives formal approval and green light to move forward
The approval of the Council of the European Union was formalized this week, on 9 October, giving a green light to the project which provides for the installation of free Wi-Fi access points in public spaces throughout Europe, with special focus on squares, libraries and hospitals. With an initial financial envelope of €120 million, access to the program is reserved for public entities with open spaces, such as those mentioned, receiving EU funding in a "first come, first served" model, so it is important for communities to apply quickly.Consultations for project submissions should be launched later this year or early 2018 and multilingual portals will be launched for information to all citizens and visitors from Europe. After approval, the regulation should be formally signed by the Council and the European Parliament by next week, on 25 October 2017, and then published in the Official Journal of the EU.
