Samsung and Google want to make SMS obsolete
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and Google LLC have announced that they are working together to deliver an enhanced smartphone messaging experience, accelerating the industry's initiative for global coverage and interoperability of Rich Communication Services (RCS). This collaboration will ensure that Android and Samsung Messaging applications work seamlessly together with RCS messaging, enabling features such as the ability to talk over Wi-Fi, create group conversations with advanced features, view typos and read receipts, and share high-resolution photos and videos between platforms.Working together, Google and Samsung will ensure that your messaging applications, Android Messaging and Samsung Messaging work seamlessly with each company's RCS technology, including cloud and business messaging platforms. So far, Google and Samsung have collaborated to introduce the RCS into selected Samsung devices; By expanding that collaboration, Samsung will work to bring RCS features to the already available * cell phones, starting with Galaxy S8 and S8 +. The new Samsung Galaxy smartphones will also natively support RCS ** messages, starting with a set of carriers that have launched or will soon launch the RCS. This means consumers and brands can enjoy more advanced conversations with users of Android Messaging or Samsung Messaging."At Samsung we follow an open collaboration model to bring premium experiences to our customers across all products," said Patrick Chomet, Executive Vice President and Chief Product and Service Innovation Team, Mobile Communications Division, Samsung Electronics. "Expanding our solid partnership with Google will bring a more advanced messaging experience to our customers, enabling them to converse seamlessly with their friends and family across multiple messaging platforms. This collaboration will help further drive the industry toward global RCS coverage and advanced messaging. "
"We are working with the mobile industry to enhance the Android messaging experience with RCS," said Anil Sabharwal, vice president of Google Communications and Photos Products. "Samsung has been a major contributor to this initiative, and our partnership will bring even more breakthroughs to our shared vision of a substantially enhanced Android messaging experience for users, brands and the broader Android ecosystem."
As an added benefit of this expanded partnership, developers and brands who create RCS Business Messaging experiences (based on the GSMA Universal Profile 2.0) using Google's or Samsung's Message Platform (MaaP) services can reach users of messaging applications Android and Samsung, bringing more advanced business messaging to many more users.
This collaboration further accelerates the adoption and availability of RCS globally, enabling the messaging experience across the Android ecosystem to be enhanced.
