TAMRON

Tamron announces 70-180mm F/2.8 telephoto zoom lens for Nikon Z

Tamron announced yesterday, October 15, 2025, the launch of its 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 telephoto zoom lens for the Nikon Z mount. Distributed in Portugal by Robisa, the model will be available in the national market starting October 23.

This lens joins the Sony E mount version, introduced by the company in 2023. The new variant for the Nikon Z system incorporates the brand's image stabilization mechanism, known as VC (Vibration Compensation), and maintains a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 throughout its entire range.

The telephoto zoom lens uses a VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear focusing motor. According to Tamron, this system was developed to offer high-speed, high-precision autofocus with quiet operation suitable for both photography and video. Its optical construction consists of 20 elements arranged in 15 groups.

The company claims this is one of the most compact and lightweight models in its category of f/2.8 telephoto zoom lenses with image stabilization. The design includes moisture resistance and a fluoride coating on the front element. Another feature is a minimum subject distance of 30 cm at the 70 mm position, allowing for close-range focusing.

The telephoto zoom lens is compatible with Tamron Lens Utility software, which allows users to customize some of its functions through a computer connection.

With this announcement of the Nikon Z mount, TAMRON is expanding the availability of the highly acclaimed 70-180mm F2.8 VC G2, previously announced in 2023 for Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras.

The 70-180mm F2.8 VC G2 is a fast-aperture telephoto zoom lens that combines TAMRON’s proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization mechanism with a class-leading compact size and weight design,* offering both outstanding mobility and greater stability across a wide range of scenes. It delivers uncompromising image quality throughout the entire zoom range. At the wide end, the lens achieves an MOD (Minimum Object Distance) of just 0.3m (11.8in), allowing for close-up compositions that allow expressive imagery unique to this lens.

For autofocus, the lens features TAMRON’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor focus mechanism that delivers excellent quietness and responsiveness for high-speed, high-precision auto-focusing whether shooting stills or video. Additionally, the lens supports TAMRON Lens Utility™, TAMRON’s dedicated software developed in-house. The software can be used to customize functions based on various shooting styles for still photography and video. This lens is designed with a focus on operability and scratch resistance. This well-balanced lens combines portability, high imaging quality, and excellent usability.

With this launch, Tamron now offers Nikon Z system users a telephoto zoom lens with an f/2.8 aperture. This model expands the brand's range of optics compatible with this mount, offering a new option for photographers using these cameras. Launch: The Tamron 70-180mm F/2.8 G2 telephoto zoom lens is now available for Nikon full-frame mirrorless cameras (Z mount).

Tweaking the focal length of a traditional workhorse zoom can create a versatile lens that’s lighter and more affordable than competitors – and that’s exactly what Tamron is doing with its new trinity zoom lens. The Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 is the lightest f/2.8 telephoto zoom available, according to the company, and now it's coming to more camera bodies.

On Tuesday(07/10), October, Tamron announced the Nikon Z Mount variant of the 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VC G2, effectively completing the so-called Holy Trinity for Z Mount creators alongside the G2 versions of the 16-30mm and 28-75mm.

Tamron previously launched the 70-180mm G2 in Sony E Mount – a lens that DCW reviewers gave five stars for its sharpness, bokeh, stabilization, and price. The Z Mount announcement brings that lens to Nikon’s mirrorless bodies, and for less than half the cost of the Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S.

Features: Its specifications include a compact design, f/2.8 aperture, and image stabilization (VC) mechanism.

Focus: Equipped with a VXD autofocus motor and a minimum focusing distance of 30 cm.

Is this lens compatible with all Nikon Z cameras? Yes, the lens is designed for the full-frame Nikon Z (such as the Z5, Z6, Z7, Z8, Z9, Zf), but it is also compatible with APS-C sensor models (such as the Z30, Z50, Zfc), where it will operate with a crop factor in the focal length.

Price and Availability: It will be available for sale in Portugal starting October 23, 2025, with a recommended retail price of 1,149 euros.
