Galaxy S25 wins design award
Samsung Electronics announced that the Galaxy S25 has been honored with the Design for Recycling® 2025 Award from the Recycled Materials Association (ReMA).
The award, considered the highest recognition in sustainable product design, will be presented on May 14 at the ReMA convention in San Diego, California.
The award recognizes Samsung’s efforts to incorporate recycled materials and reduce the environmental impact of its products.
The Galaxy S25 is notable for being the first device in the Galaxy series to use recycled cobalt in its batteries, sourced from the company’s new Circular Battery Supply Chain system.
The Galaxy S25 incorporates eight different types of recycled materials into its components, including aluminum, rare earth elements such as neodymium and steel. Samsung has introduced recycled material for the first time in the aluminum Armor frame, ensuring that all external components of the device contain at least one recycled material.
The S25’s batteries contain a minimum of 50 percent recycled cobalt, which is recovered from previously used Galaxy devices and discarded batteries during the manufacturing process. This system allows for the reuse of valuable materials and reduces the need for new mineral resources to be mined.
The Galaxy S25’s packaging also reflects the company’s environmental commitment, being made from 100 percent recycled paper, thus eliminating the use of single-use plastics.
Daniel Araujo, Vice President and Head of Sustainability Management Office, Mobile eXperience Division, Samsung Electronics, said the company is committed to incorporating sustainability throughout the entire life cycle of its products, from design to use and disposal.
Samsung’s Self-Repair program allows users to extend the life of their devices while contributing to the reduction of e-waste.
These initiatives fit within Samsung’s broader environmental goals, which include transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy across all global DX operations by 2027 and incorporating at least one recycled material into every module of every mobile product by 2030.
Robin Wiener, president of the Recycled Materials Association, highlighted Samsung’s leadership in integrating design for recycling principles into every phase of the Galaxy S25, demonstrating a commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility.
Review and recognition...ReMA, a North American recycling industry association, has awarded the Design for Recycling® Award annually since 2006 to products with sustainable designs. The association evaluates products based on the use of recycled materials, the minimization of environmental impact during the production phase, the ease of recycling of the product, and the economic viability of recycling.
The Galaxy S25 represents a significant step forward in Samsung’s efforts to improve circularity in its products and operations, combining technological innovation with environmental responsibility, without compromising the strength, aesthetics or durability of its devices.
